DO YOU HAVE TO CHANGE THE TRANSMISSION FLUID IN A MAZDA?

As a car owner, there are many maintenance needs your car has that you need to keep track of. Oil changes are just part of it… there is also windshield wiper replacement, tire tread/inflation, washer fluid and a whole host of other fluids. Thankfully, many fluid refills are taken care of and checked on whenever you bring your Mazda in for service. But, you might be wondering if you have to change the transmission fluid in a Mazda, and if so, how often?

It’s a good question to ask, and an important one too. Thankfully, there is a simple answer. Mazda vehicles equipped with SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY do not require transmission fluid changes, as they have a lifetime transmission fluid that should last throughout the ownership of the vehicle. The only time transmission fluid would need to be changed is when a major component or entire transmission needs to be replaced.

DO OLDER MAZDA MODELS NEED THE TRANSMISSION FLUID CHANGED?

As you may know, SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY is a more recent innovation, having found its way into Mazda models only a few years back. So, if you drive an older Mazda vehicle, what should you do?

Generally speaking, the transmission will still not require regular maintenance, but the care required for your transmission may depend on your model and model year. The best thing to do in this case is to consult your owner’s manual or contact us at Holiday Mazda. For example, although Mazda models generally won’t require transmission maintenance on a regular basis, the Mazda Tribute is one such exception that does require regular transmission fluid changes.

HOW TO KNOW WHEN YOUR TRANSMISSION FLUID NEEDS CHANGING?

If your vehicle is one that does require regular transmission fluid changes, you should check your owner’s manual to determine how often that service needs to be performed. That being said, there are some telltale symptoms that often indicate the need for new transmission fluid.

For example, if you often work on your car yourself, you may notice that the fluid is unusually dark or that it looks dirty. But, even if you don’t work on your vehicle, you may notice a strong odor that smells like something is burning.
