There are certain topics when it comes to cars that will always spark a heated discussion, and one of them is whether or not it is worth it to use premium fuel in a car. As with other topics, this one has an answer that keeps evolving as vehicle technology gets better. But what about in a Mazda like the MX-5 Miata or the new, premium 2016 CX-9? Do you need to use premium fuel in a Mazda?
Does the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata need premium fuel?
If there is one Mazda vehicle that people wonder whether or not to use premium fuel in: it is the MX-5 Miata. Mazda’s Owner’s Manual for the 2016 MX-5 Miata recommends that its drivers use premium unleaded fuel with an Octane rating of 91 or above to get the best performance. As it happens, performance is something many Miata owners are pretty interested in getting and maintaining!
But can you use regular unleaded fuel in the 2016 MX-5 Miata? Yes you can also use fuel with an octane rating of 87 to 90, but Mazda does state that you’ll be seeing a reduced level of performance with reduced engine output — and you’ll also get some engine knocking. Engine knocking happens can be harmful, especially to older vehicles or performance models. Should you use premium fuel in the 2016 Mazda CX-9?
One thing that we’ve noticed from looking at spec sheets for the 2016 Mazda CX-9 is that it has a horsepower rating for both an 87 octane fuel and premium fuel with a 93 for the octane rating. If you go with the 87 the Mazda CX-9 will have 227 horsepower to work with, otherwise the higher octane fuel means hitting 250 horsepower. One important thing to note is that neither will negatively impact the capabilities of the CX-9, such as tow rating, but the higher octane fuel will likely increase fuel efficiency and its acceleration in comparison.
