Are there changes to the engine lineup for the 2018 Mazda6?
Big changes are coming to the 2018 Mazda6 on all fronts. A new Signature trim level, a redesigned interior, and more are all coming, but the biggest change may sit under the hood. Not only is the standard 2.5-liter engine getting some minor improvements, but the Mazda6 is also getting a turbo option for 2018! Mazda fans, it’s time to rejoice.
What are the specifications of the new Mazda6 turbo engine?
This engine is largely the same engine that is in the Mazda CX-9, so there is a lot that we already do know about it. It will have the same displacement as the standard Mazda6 but with the added turbo power making it a 2.5-liter turbo.
With turbocharging, the new Mazda6 engine will be able to produce 310 pound-feet of torque and 250 horsepower on premium gas. On regular gas, the engine’s horsepower will only see a slight reduction to 227 horsepower.
As far as efficiency goes, the 2018 Mazda6 will not be available until spring and hasn’t undergone EPA testing. As a baseline though, we can use the numbers for the front-wheel drive Mazda CX-9, which are 22-city mpg and 38-highway mpg. Remember though that the Mazda6 is a much lighter platform due to its smaller size, and it also cuts a more aerodynamic profile, so the final efficiency numbers should be a bit better than that.
What improvements are coming to the standard Mazda6 engine?
Mazda, being the perfectionists that they are, made several minor upgrades to the standard 2.5-liter Mazda6 engine all aimed at reducing internal friction, thereby increasing performance and improving efficiency. Final numbers aren’t out yet, but expect the power to be pretty similar to the 2017 model year with 184 horsepower.

The biggest change however, comes by way of cylinder-deactivation. This comes in handy when you are at cruising speed. Your engine doesn’t need all its cylinders operating. So it can cut one cylinder, save some fuel, and still keep going without you even noticing. This will be the first North American 4-cylinder car with cylinder deactivation.
