PREPARATION NEEDED TO DRIVE A MIATA IN THE WINTER

The first thing you’re going to want to do is get a good set of snow tires for your Miata. If you’ve driven in the Wisconsin snow before, or anywhere else that gets hit with a lot of the white stuff, then you might be feeling confident in your winter-driving abilities. However, we recommend putting a set of snow tires on your Miata for two reasons. First, it’s a rear-wheel drive vehicle and the extra traction will help a lot. Second, come on, it’s a Miata. Why risk it when snow tires will cost so much less than a body shop repair?

KEEP YOUR MIATA FROM RUSTING IN THE WINTER

Snow tires are the best way to prep your Miata for winter, but you’ll also need to take good care of it week-to-week until the good weather returns in the spring. Road salt is not going to be your friend, and you should make it a habit to thoroughly wash your Miata — including underneath it — about once a week or so. It also helps to have a good layer of wax on your Miata before winter starts.

Another tip we recommend for if you want to drive a Miata in winter is to keep a bag of kitty litter or salt in the trunk. Since the Miata is light, it’s easier for it to get stuck compared to some heavier vehicles. The litter or salt will be a lifesaver if you’re stuck and don’t have someone to assist you.
